I worked as a Community Garden Leader for Denver Urban Gardens from 2008-2012. Located on Denver Public School property, we focused on educating elementary aged kids as well as nearby residents in organic gardening and sustainability. We also donated vegetables, herbs, and pre-made salads and soups to local food banks. We took a fledgling garden and renovated it by expanding the number of plots, creating new pathways with crush and flagstone, updating picnic tables, building compost bins, installing artwork from the kids in the adjacent school…and by our second year the participation within the community grew from 4 families to 15! Tutorials included composting, herb pruning, seed harvesting and storing, organic pest control, seasonal cooking, canning/pickling, herbal remedies, and meal preparation.
